Word for Mac Zotero plugin tab invisible & buttons not working

I am using a university-owned Mac; Zotero worked great upon purchase and initial installation. A month after installation the Zotero tab in Word disappeared- there is no text- but I can still click on it if I hover across the space where it should be. The Zotero buttons then show up but don't do anything when pressed.

I have tried to reinstall the Zotero plugin, manually reinstall, and also uninstall/reinstalled both Zotero and Word with no luck.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

The issue you are describing occurs with the Windows Word plugin only. You may have installed the Windows Zotero.dotm file. See https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_manual_installation#manually_installing_the_zotero_word_processor_plugin for the macOS section

I just uninstalled Zotero and deleted all Zotero files, then downloaded and installed a fresh copy of Zotero 7.0.30 for Mac; my error persists.

I additionally uninstalled Office 2021 via my institute's managed software center and reinstalled / attempted the "Reinstall Microsoft Word Add-In" with no luck.

I then went in my Word startup folder, deleted the .dotm file, and reinstalled via Zotero. The Zotero tab is still invisible in my taskbar and none of the Zotero buttons do anything.

Did you confirm that all traces of Zotero (including the invisible tab and all mentions of Zotero.dotm) are gone from Word after deleting Zotero.dotm? You need to verify that the version you're installing via Zotero is actually the version being used.

Yes. I just deleted Zotero.dotm from my Word startup folder. Opened Word and the invisible tab is no longer there. Reinstalled the Add-in via Zotero settings and the .dotm file is back in my Word startup folder + Word now has the invisible tab with inoperational buttons.
