How does using multiple accounts actually work?

Hello! I'm a little confused. I'm trying to set up a separate Zotero account from the one I use at my job, and so I created a separate profile and attempted to sync it with the new account. However, I then got a warning that this would delete all the info having to do with my old account. Will this only delete it in that profile and I can ignore that warning, or have I missed a step somewhere? To put it another way, if I follow through and delete the files and install the new account, the old one will still be safe and installed in the other profile, is that correct?
  • If you're seeing that — and, more to the point, if you still see your library data when you open Zotero — you're using the same data directory and should not proceed.

Creating a new profile should create a new data directory for that profile automatically, but as the documentation says, sometimes that might not happen, in which case you'll want to create one manually.

(Note, too, that 1) using multiple profiles is an advanced configuration that we don't recommend for most people and 2) creating multiple free accounts is a violation of the Zotero terms of service. Generally we recommend using a single account with multiple email addresses and using collections or group libraries for organization.)
  • Thanks for the info!

My other account is a paid account through my job, which is why I'm wanting to set up a separate data directory, as I can't use the space my work is paying for for a personal project. Would you be able to message me how to go about setting up a separate directory manually?
  • From the linked page:
If you see your existing data directory in the new profile, create a new data directory manually and point the new profile to there from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences.
  • Ok cool! The only thing I'm still stuck on is how to manually create a new data directory. Is there somewhere on the site that gives instructions for that? I haven't seen any, but I could have missed them.
  • It's just an empty folder. Zotero will create the contents
  • It's all set up, thanks guys!
