Detect if citation is from Zotero or typed in Word

How do I know if a citation is linked in Zotero or simply typed in, in a Word document. Previously, if you cursored over it - it turned grey. Now it only turns grey when the citation is cited for the first time and linked to Zotero. Subsequent references don't turn grey and I can't detect if it was simply typed in or is from Zotero. Help!

Zotero citations are simply Word fields, and any that are active (i.e., haven't been accidentally or intentionally flattened) would show in gray as long as you have Word field shading enabled.
