Zotero 7 + Word 2016:Zotero 在更新文档时出错

问题描述:
- 在 Word 里点击 “Add/Edit Citation” 时,立即出现提示:
“Zotero 在更新文档时出错。您要查看故障排除说明吗?”
- 即使是在新建的空白文档中,也会出现同样的错误。
- 我已经尝试过:
- 删除 Normal.dotm,让 Word 自动重新创建
- 删除 STARTUP 里的 Zotero.dotm,并在 Zotero 里重新安装 Word 插件
- 检查宏设置,启用“信任对 VBA 工程对象模型的访问”
- 关闭其他 Word 加载项
- 确认 Zotero 和 Word 都不是以管理员身份运行
- 根据文档调整 UAC 设置,并重启
- 测试过使用 Windows 8 兼容模式运行 Zotero(问题仍然存在)

Upgrade Storage
Environment (problem machine):
- Windows 11
- Zotero 7.0.30 (64-bit) (I also tested Zotero 6 later, see below)
- Microsoft Word 2016, 32-bit
- Chinese UI for both Word and Zotero
Symptoms:
- In Word, when I click “Add/Edit Citation” in the Zotero tab, the progress bar appears briefly and then I immediately get the error dialog: “Zotero 在更新文档时出错。您要查看故障排除说明吗?” (“Zotero experienced an error updating your document. Would you like to see troubleshooting instructions?”).
- This happens even in a brand new, blank document saved locally (not on OneDrive).
- The error occurs regardless of whether there are existing citations in the document or not.
What I’ve tried so far (on this machine):
- Removed Normal.dotm and let Word recreate it.
- Removed Zotero.dotm from the Word STARTUP folder and reinstalled the Word plugin from Zotero multiple times.
- Verified macro settings: “Disable all macros with notification” selected and “Trust access to the VBA project object model” enabled.
- Disabled all other Word add-ins and tested again.
- Checked that neither Zotero nor Word are running as administrator, and that no compatibility mode is enabled for either (except for briefly testing Zotero in Windows 8 compatibility mode as suggested in the docs; the error still occurred).
- Adjusted UAC from “Never notify” to a higher level, then rebooted.
- Temporarily disabled Windows Defender Firewall for testing and re-enabled it afterwards (no change).
- Ran both “Quick Repair” and “Online Repair” for Office 2016 from Apps & Features, rebooted, and tested again.
- Tested both Zotero 7.0.30 and Zotero 6 on this same machine → both show the same “error updating document” behavior in a new blank document.
I also tested on another computer:
- On a different machine with Word 2016 and Zotero 6, everything works correctly: “Add/Edit Citation” opens the citation dialog and citations are inserted without error.
- This suggests the problem is specific to the Windows/Office environment on this machine rather than the document itself or my Zotero data.
At one point (after reinstalling), I briefly saw the “Could not find a running Word instance” error, but after adjusting UAC and restarting, that went away and I’m back to the original “error updating your document” problem.

If there are any additional tests you’d like me to run (e.g., more detailed logging, checking specific registry keys, testing a particular Zotero/Word combination, etc.), I’m happy to do that. Right now it seems like a low-level integration issue between Zotero and this specific Word installation, since the same Zotero versions work fine on another machine.
For anyone who finds this thread later: in my case the issue wasn’t Zotero or the plugin installation, but a Word find/replace setting inside the document. After turning that option back on and letting Word/Zotero regenerate the fields, “Zotero experienced an error updating your document” disappeared and citations started working normally again.
