Stop Zotero Updater from running when launching app?

This isn't absolutely critical to fix, as it's more an annoyance than a problem, but...

I'm using Zotero on a managed computer system and since mid November (but not on September 30, 2025) when I launch it, I get a request to allow Zotero Updater to make changes. The thing is, this requires an admin user to allow, and I do not have those privileges. I can just close it out and it starts, but I'm wondering if there's a way to turn off this functionality? I browsed through the forums and found a way to turn off the auto-update preference, but even after I turned it off, the Zotero Updater still ran upon startup. So it's something different than whatever runs in the background when Zotero is running. I checked manually with the Check for Updates... item under the Help menu, and it said my Zotero is up to date.

Anyway, if I could fix this it would be nice, so thought I would ask. :)

If this is 7.0.16, that's a special fix that had to be pushed out to Windows users to fix the regular updater. Install a current version and this will go away.
  • Ah! That's my version so that's gotta be it. Thank you so much!
  • I'm also on the same type of network as OP and having this be a recurring issue. - agency specific version USGS-Zotero-8.0.3. Any further insights. Are we behind on the versioning and is this causing an issue? No more recent versions available on my end.
  • @wjanousek: This was specific to Zotero 7.0.16. If you're running some other version, start a new thread and explain the exact issue you're experiencing, in your own words, and ideally with screenshots. But if you're running some unofficial version of Zotero, you would need to ask your IT department for help. We can only support official versions.
