Citing “Whole no.” journals

I have a journal article where the place I got it from cites it as “[Journal Name] 15, no. 2, whole no. 56 (Winter 1988).”

“15” goes in Volume, “2” or “no. 2” goes in Issue, "Winter 1988” goes in Date…but where does “whole no. 56” go?

It could actually be the page or something completely different, but it is difficult to say for sure with just a citation: references can sometimes be unreliable. Do you have access to that article? If not, maybe you could say what the journal is?

It looks like the “whole number” for this journal is a continuous issue numbering that spans volumes. I would either omit this or enter it in the same issue number field as “2”—something like “2/56” or “2 (56)”
