APA 7: Access date not showing for websites in Word bibliography

Hi everyone,

I’m using Zotero version 7.0.26 for my master’s thesis and citing sources in APA 7th edition. I’m having an issue with websites: the access date (accessed...) does not appear in the bibliography generated in Word, even though I’ve entered it in the Zotero database.

According to my professor’s requirements, I need to include the “Retrieved [date] from [URL]” information for online sources in the reference list.

Could someone please tell me:

1. Where exactly in Zotero I should enter the access date so that it appears correctly?
2. Is it possible that the APA 7 style itself omits the access date by default, and that’s why it doesn’t show up?
3. If so, is there a way to customize the style so the access date is displayed anyway?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best,
Jannik Hense
  • APA style specifically calls to _not_ include the access date unless the website updates frequently. Zotero implements this rule by showing the access date if there is no publication date and not otherwise.

APA style has not included access dates by default since 5th edition, so your professor’s requirements are several editions out of date.

You could edit the APA CSL style to always show the access date, but I would recommend first taking to your professor and showing them rule 9.16 in the APA 7th edition manual.
