how can i rank the paper according to the time it is modified?

i originally try to rank the paper according to the time it is modified. so i try to use the "Date Modified", however it seems doesn't work, as shown in the picture. in a previous discussion, dstillman said that, "Adding an annotation doesn’t change Date Modified on the parent item or the attachment." . what i really want is that when i make a note or edit a note, the time will be remembered and can be ranked according to this time, so i can easily find the paper i was reading. does anybody know how to acieve this? thank you
