Zotero 7 issues

[Split from Please tell me how to go back to the former version.]

I agree with you about Zotero 7. I had no issues with Zotero 6, and found the colour scheme very easy on the eye. Zotero 7 continually 'disconnects' from my Word document and I have to close and restart the app several times within a 2-hour time frame; which equates to a few times too many in a working day. Other little things that have changed are not an improvement on Z6. For example, 'info', 'notes', 'tags', 'related' were clearly spelled out and placed at the top ribbon, but they are now on the side ribbon and presented as symbols (you need to place the cursor over the symbol to read the description). With Z6, you could just highlight the existing DOI info and paste new info over the existing, but Z7 requires deleting the old info first, before pasting the new info. These are little things, granted, but why change a simple function that has worked well and expediently to one that requires additional steps.

Fortunately, Zotero still has version 6 available (at least for now). I really hope they will fix all the hiccups with Zotero 7 and take on board our feedback before deleting version 6.

Not clear what you mean here. See Reporting Problems for the two things we always need in order to help.

The new design is much more flexible and was a necessity in order to add additional features such as document previews and annotation views. All information can viewed on screen at once or by scrolling, sections can be reordered and collapsed, and plugins can create new sections with custom information. There was no way to support all of that with the old tab system.

Not sure what you mean by this. You can certainly still paste over a field's contents without deleting the old content. (You can also now paste over a field via right-click without even selecting it.)
  • Hi dstillman

Thanks for responding. I'll copy and paste the error message when the issue resurfaces and see how I can submit the error report and grab the ID. I am using Windows 11 and 64-bit OS.

I very much appreciate the hard work that has gone into developing and releasing Zotero 7. The feedback is a constructive way of letting you know what has worked well in version 6 but seems to have changed in version 7.

In general, I have found that Z7 is not as user-friendly as Z6. This is something I can get used to. It's really when I have to close Zotero 7 and restart it (several times) for it to work in my Word document that makes working with this version a bit problematic.

    Cheers and many thanks
