two volumes of the same title as duplicate items?

I need to enter two items: book 1 is volume 1 of a series, book 2 is volume 2 of the same series (both volumes belong to series number 35). Each of the two volumes has its own title.

This is what I enter into Zotero 7.0.27:

Item Type: Book
Title: the same for both volumes
Series: the same for both volumes
Series Number: the same for both volumes
Volume: entered as "1: [title of volume 1]" in the first item and "2: [title of volume 2]" in the second item
# of Volumes: 2

Now these two items are flagged as Duplicate Items, and I'm asked to Merge 2 items. I've tried adding "(I)" and "(II)", respectively, in the title fields of both items, but this doesn't resolve the issue. – What am I missing?

There is no issue. You don't need to merge those 2 items.

Is there a way to prevent Zotero from marking these two entries as duplicate items?

Not currently, but planned. Meanwhile, you could give a try to the plugin Zoplicate.
