Use of network path in group libraries

Hello forum,

We have a use case in our organisation where we use a group library with multiple users to store the metadata of documents and help with the organisation (all synced to zotero cloud), and the actual files are stored on local servers for confidentiality reasons. We cannot sync the actual files to zotero cloud.

I understand that we can add a web link to a file in a group library, but not a 'linked file' like C:\users\someuser\file.pdf as this will not be available on different machines.

In our use case, the full network path of a file is always available e.g. \\storage.intranet.company.com\department1\project1\file.pdf
Every authorised user has access to this network path.
If this link is put into a file explorer, the correct file would be opened. However, if we add this path as a web link to zotero, it automatically opens it in the web browser.

Is it possible to use this type of network paths in a group library? Alternatively, is there a way we can modify the client so that it tries to access this type of link not via web browser but with file explorer?

Thanks!
