Upgrade StorageUn-sync/cleanup local storage

I have large group libraries, with attachments that I have synec to my local device by default. However, given the size of the storage folder (>10GB), I would want to not sync the attachments anymore.
My assumption was that I just set the "Sync attachment files in group libraries using Zotero storage" to "as needed" and it would only keep/store those attachments on my device that I open at some point. However, all attachments remain on my local device. Do I have to manually delete the storage folder, and it will start syncing again as needed?
