No Access to Notes

I've been using Zotero for a few weeks now and I'm quite happy with it, but now I have a problem that I can't seem to solve. When I'm in a PDF, I can't open the notes bar on the right. I can add a standalone note and also a general entry note, but when I'm in the PDF itself, nothing happens when I click the note icon. Furthermore, when I highlight text passages, I can't add them to a note - the field is simply gray.
Also, all the notes, or in my case, the highlights, that I made before the problem occurred are "locked"?! There's a little lock symbol on them (see attachment).
I haven't found a real solution and would appreciate it if someone could explain to me what the hell I accidentally pressed.

    Can you provide a screenshot of what you're referring to?

    The field would be gray if you don't have a note open.
    Also, all the notes, or in my case, the highlights, that I made before the problem occurred are "locked"?!
    Those are annotations created in an external PDF reader that are embedded in the file. Use File → Import Annotations to convert them to Zotero annotations.
