Stopping old items from appearing in citation tool

I am not a very experienced Zotero user, so this might a silly question. How do you keep old items that you don't use anymore from appearing in the citation tool, while keeping them somewhere in you library?

Preventing them from showing up in the citation dialog when they match a search, you mean? That's not possible.

(Though you could create a group library, move them there, and then use the "classic" citation dialog in Zotero 7 or library mode in the upcoming Zotero 8 to limit your search to My Library)
