Obsidian Links in URL Fields

I store most of my research notes in Obsidian.

In my workflow, the most convenient way of linking those notes to Zotero is to add an Obsidian link ('obsidian://open...') in the URL field. Double clicking on an item in the lists opens the Obsidian document seamlessly (after deactivating the security pop-up in settings).

The problem I face is that this procedure works as long as there is no PDF file/link attached to the item. Which is frequently the case. In that case the PDF is opened by default, making the Obsidian link inoperative.

That wouldn't be a problem if the URL field was clickable by some means. In the online version of Zotero (Web Library) there is a nice icon beside the "URL" field and works great: clicking there Obsidian is opened, while clicking on the list opens the PDF file.

Having the same set up in the Zotero app would be nice.

Other suggestions are welcome too.

  • Which Zotero version do you have? I lost track of where this changed, but I believe in Zotero 6, you'd just click on "URL" to go to the URL. In Zotero 7+ there's a View Online icon right next to the URL:

That said, using the URL field for personal metadata is going to cause you all sorts of grief if you want to use Zotero to generate citations. The intended metadata for that field is the link to an item's full text and citation styles will include it as such.
A link to Obsidian would typically go into an attached link, which you can double-click open from the attachment pane (which in turn you can pin to the top for easy accessibility in Zotero 7+)

7.0.24. (Mac) The icon/link appears and works great with regular 'http' links, but not with the Obsidian ones.

Having said so, I find your suggestion quite useful. I didn't know that panes could be pinned. I rarely have to generate citations with URLs, but pinning is definitely a more appropriate/elegant solution.

Actually, pinning the abstract also lets me to see both attachments and abstracts (something I also missed after upgrading to Zotero 7).

That's great. Thank you very much.

    — PS. For best results I decided to disable attachment previews in the Advanced Config Editor ("extensions.zotero.showAttachmentPreview")
