Beginner question - history footnote citations and explanatory notes

Hello Zotero community,
I am working on a history book project and need to be able to cite references as footnotes and to add explanatory notes to some references (for example, this event was first recorded in [REF], see XYZ to better understand the ramifications of ....)

Is it possible to do this with Zotero or do I have to combine Word footnotes with Zotero citations? Sorry, I'm a newby to history formats and am turning in circles.

1. Zotero USES Word's footnote functionality. It only tells Word: "Please insert a footnote for me please".
2. You would typically use the prefix/suffix fields for this utilising the Zotero Word add-on: https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage
