Problems with page numbers and annotations between iOS and desktop — PDFs and epubs

edited August 31, 2025
Correctly detected book page numbers from desktop Zotero are not coming across to iOS app (below, p28 is correct), rather the PDF page number (p36) is being used. Also, in this example, the iOS highlighter is incorrectly rendering ligatures (see the garbled ‘th’ at the start of iOS highlight) but these are fine in desktop.

In the iOS beta with epub reading and annotating, the highlights have no page numbers. This causes problems when exporting notes and annotations. See below: first highlight is from desktop, second is from iOS. They appear in the correct order / sequence, so it seems to only be a labelling issue. My current workaround is needing to delete and rehighlight every iOS annotation on desktop, as it’s also not possible to edit the (missing) page numbers.

I've just encountered another related error here.

In at least one epub, some annotations are only appearing on desktop and not on iOS (phone and ipad). The items I can see on iOS are now editable, allowing me to attach page numbers. The items only on desktop are not editable and have no page numbers.

I'm using current Zotero 8 betas on both Windows desktop and iOS devices.
