Error while adding citations to Word 16.100 on macOS Ventura 13.2.1

Report ID: 1848337668

Hello! I am unable to add new citations to a long Word document I previously added multiple citations to via the "Add/Edit Citations" button in the Zotero tab. Now, when I click on that button, the Add Citation box opens, I am able to search through my references, after clicking "Enter" a number appears and the text "{Citation}" is populated in the footer, after a while the blue progress line loads (not completely) in the Add Citation box, but then I get a "Zotero experienced an error updating your document." error message and the full citation does not appear (only the number and "{Citation}" remain in the footer).

I have been through the steps listed on the troubleshooting pages multiple times at this point, including updating both Word and Zotero, restarting my computer, deleting the Zotero.dotm file and reinstalling the plug-in in Zotero -- without success.

Any idea what is going on? Your help would be much appreciated!

Do you use any utility software that interacts with your clipboard? If so, try disabling it.
  • (This is also a very outdated version of macOS. You should update to the latest version of Ventura (13.7.8), if not a later macOS version.)
  • Thank you for your messages @dstillman. To answer your question, I do not use any utility software that interacts with my clipboard.

Following your suggestion, I have now updated to macOS Sequoia 15.6.1. Still no luck, so I went through the usual troubleshooting steps. Unfortunately, I am still not able to add new citations to my draft document (even when copying and pasting the draft in part or in whole into a new blank document or when creating a new draft document by "saving [it] as"). However, I can add these new citations to a blank document, and I can add other citations to the original draft document, just not the specific set of new ones I need to add.

I am also unable to select the "Citation Style" in the "Document Preferences" under the "Zotero" tab on Word 16.100.1 for my draft document (I get an error message), but I can select a Citation Style for a blank document. All of this seems to indicate that there is something broken into my draft document...

Any additional suggestions people may would be much appreciated.
  • As the page says, unless you can clear the entire contents of the (copy of the) document and still reproduce the issue, the last step will by definition isolate the problem.
