Starting a new article with citations and can't figure out how to start using Zotero

I know, sounds pretty dumb, but I've read and read and although there are lots of instructions about lots of ways to do things, I don't see anywhere that just tells me a,b,c how to open a document and start adding references.

I'll take any help I can get. Thanks.
