Citation font size same as normal text in google docs

My citations are no longer two sizes smaller but the same as the normal text. The problem doesn't seem to be on Gdoc's side — when I add a footnote it's the right size/smaller as normal. Help much appreciated, have a PhD draft due in a few days...

Zotero citation follow the text style, including font size, of the surrounding text in which it is inserted. If that is not the case, you would likely have to follow the final step of Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents to figure out the cause and so that we can help troubleshoot or fix it.

It doesn't seem to be linked to a specific citation — the same error appears on any new or old document with any citation.
