Text highlighting running on after citation: Google docs

I have the bug where the text after a citation continues to be highlighted, and format changed to deiffernt font and size (from NTR 12 to Ariel 11). I've been clearing formatting and resetting after every citation but its killing my thesis. Any fixes in the settings? This for google docs, and it happens on both mac and PC.
