search which require words with accented characters

sometimes one searches for an author's name without fully remembering the correct accented character(s): i think particularly of French, Spanish, but it is true also for other languages, especially in case one is not a native speaker.
without the correct accented characters the search gives no results, obviously.

any way to overcome the problem? e.g. some type of simililarity search which uses only the base character ignoring the variations constituted by diacritics (accents, umlaut, ecc.)
