Editing a Citation Style to Limit Title field words

I'm trying to edit the National Library of Medicine citation style to limit the title field to the first 3 words of the title. Can anyone provide an overview of how to do this? I tried to use the style editor tool in Zotero, but could not make it work. Thank you!

You can specify to use the short title by adding <text variable="title" form="short"/>. This will use the short form of the title as provided in your item data; it is not possible to automatically truncate the title to 3 words.
