Zotero Freezes When Adding Citation in Large Document (310 Pages)

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the final phase of writing my dissertation, and I'm encountering a serious issue with Zotero. My document is about 310 pages long, and whenever I try to add or edit a citation, the program becomes unresponsive. I just see a red progress bar, and nothing happens.

This is making it extremely difficult to continue working on my dissertation. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to make Zotero work more smoothly with large documents?

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you in advance!
  • What OS and word processor? Do you have "Automatically update citations" disabled in the plugin's Document Preferences window?
  • I have the mac verison 12.5. If I disable "automatically update citation", the windows where I usually would type in my citation to find it won't even open...
  • Due to limitations of Mac Word, the Zotero plugin there is quite slow. For a document that's
300+ pages long you might need to wait a few minutes before the dialog appears. We recommend disabling "Automatically update citations" preference, which will make the dialog appear faster when adding multiple citations (only the first time is slow).

If that's still too slow for you, we recommend splitting your document into multiple documents per chapter, and adding citations there, then merging the document back into a single document at the end and inserting the bibliography. You can also temporarily switch to a Windows machine to finish your document.
