Zotero not starting after update to 7.0.16/7.0.18 on Windows/Linux

Unfortunately we discovered a problem in Zotero 7.0.16 for Windows and Zotero 7.0.16 and 7.0.18 for Linux that could cause the app not to start for a small number of people, even after a reinstallation. Mac users are not affected.

If this is affecting you, you can fix it just by installing Zotero 7.0.19 from the download page. Your data won't be affected.

If you're currently running Zotero 7.0.16 on Windows or Zotero 7.0.16 or 7.0.18 on Linux, you won't receive 7.0.19 automatically, since that would trigger this bug. We're working on a fix for those versions, but if you're reading this, you can simply install Zotero 7.0.19 from the download page now and be sure you're in the clear.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

What's the recommended way to manually update on Linux using the official tarball to preserve all settings and the whole database?
Just overwriting the whole main directory of Zotero will do it, since the config files and database are stored in a separate folder.

Happened to me also, couldn't open software even after restart. Problem solved with downloading 7.0.19 and overwriting existing file as suggested. Thanks!
  • For Windows users, how can I install the new version if I cannot uninstall the previous one, because always keep showing me this window?

    Thanks!
  • @jmbarba: You should be able to just reinstall Zotero 7.0.19 over your current version. If that's not working, delete C:\Program Files\Zotero and try again.
