Zotero only offers American Chemical Society style and won’t accept APA style—suspect corrupted CSL

I’m running Zotero 6.0.32 on macOS Ventura and using the Microsoft Word for Mac 16.78 integration. Until recently I could switch between styles freely (APA 7th, Chicago, etc.) via Zotero → Document Preferences. Now, whenever I select any APA style—even after installing it fresh from the style repository—my in-text citations and bibliography stubbornly format in ACS (American Chemical Society) style.

What I’ve tried so far:

Reinstalled APA 6th/7th CSL via Zotero → Preferences → Cite → Styles → Get additional styles

Removed and re-added the Word plugin under Preferences → Cite → Word Processors

Quit & restarted both Zotero and Word multiple times

Cleared my user-installed CSL folder (~/Zotero/styles/) and let Zotero rebuild defaults

Tested in a new blank document—same behavior

Every style change in Document Preferences briefly flashes the correct style name, then reverts back to “American Chemical Society” formatting on refresh. No error messages appear.

My questions:

How can I fully purge or repair a potentially corrupted CSL script so Zotero will honor APA styles again?

Where does Zotero cache its built-in CSL files on macOS, and how can I restore the original APA CSL?

Are there logs or debug steps I can enable to see why the style switch fails?

Any pointers on resetting Zotero’s style library or troubleshooting this phantom ACS lock-in would be greatly appreciated!

System info: • Zotero 6.0.32 (Intel) • Word for Mac 16.78 • macOS 13.5.2

Thank you in advance! —Wayne

  • Start by updating to Zotero 7.

If it still happens, reset your styles from the Advanced → Files and Folders section of the Zotero settings.

If it still happens after that, provide a Debug ID for reproducing it.
