Incorrect footnote links added in Zotero PDF viewer (MacOS)

It looks like the Zotero PDF viewer (7.0.15) on MacOS is adding PDF links from footnote symbols to the footnotes themselves, along with a tooltip of the footnote that appears when hovering over the footnote symbol. I like the idea, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work sensibly in papers where (1) the footnote symbols are positive integers and (2) there are positive integers exponents in equations, both of which are common in math and physics.

As an example, see the link that's added for footnote 3 in this paper:

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1411.2995

Specifically, in the equation in the sentence

> We start from the simplest translationally invariant construction on H := (C^3)^{⊗L^D} and discuss isotropic states and decaying correlations below.

the exponent 3 on C is mistakenly being interpreted as a footnote symbol.

There's probably not a perfect fix for this since, if the PDF doesn't come with embedded links, then there's always going to be the possibility of ambiguity. But here are some possibilities that would at least greatly decrease the error rate, and which can be combined:

* Don't link footnote symbols in math (insofar as that can be determined).
* Don't link footnote symbols from one page to a footnote on another. That's rarely done in papers.
* Don't link footnote symbols if the identical symbol appears multiple times in the document.
* Don't link footnote symbols when they are integers.

(Incidentally, a separate bug: the tooltip for footnote 1 on page 1 of the paper above is incorrect. The tooltip displays the entire page rather than the footnote text. Same for footnote 2, but not footnote 3.)

  • We’ll try to fix the incorrectly detected references in formulas like this.

We’ll also see if we can improve the footnote preview popup.

    Thanks for reporting.
