apa edition 7 now cites with footnotes, not after the sentence? How can this be? Please help!

No, you have something set up wrong. APA had always been (author, year). Where are you setting the citation style?

Edit, then settings, then in the window quote and select “APA 7th edition.”
That was always set and it quoted directly after the paraphrase!
Now, when quoting, a number and a footnote appear. But I haven't changed anything in the meantime.

No, the Cite settings are just for managing installed styles — you can't select a style there.
You choose a style where you're actually using it. In the case of the word processor plugin, that's in the plugin's Document Preferences window.
