669208941 - Zotero Connector sometimes does nothing, not even error

edited 19 days ago
Firefox 139, Zotero Connector 5.0.166, Zotero 7.1-beta.36+1eacc8bbd
(The "report errors" section in the Connector preferences says "No errors have been logged", so not sure whether that submitted report will be of any use)

When opening URL [1] in a tab, Firefox shows the PDF. At first the Zotero Connector icon in the toolbar showed the red Z and a tooltip saying something like "can't work in this page".
I changed tabs to look at the "report errors" section of Zotero Connector, but it showed no errors.
I changed back to the first tab, and now the Zotero Connector icon showed "Save to Zotero (webpage with snapshot)". Nothing about saving the PDF.
Clicking the icon does nothing anyway, and nothing appears in the "report errors".

I have been seeing this kind of strange behavior in a few pages lately, but it's hard to pin down and other pages do work correctly, so it made me wonder if I'm seeing bugs or not. So it'd be useful to know:
* Is it normal that Zotero sometimes treats PDF URLs as "webpage with snapshot"?
* Are reports still useful if the "report errors" section shows "No errors have been logged"?

If you see a file:// URL, Firefox is set to download PDFs instead of showing them directly, and the Zotero Connector won't be able to run.

You need to make sure Firefox is set to view the PDF at its remote http(s):// URL ("Open in Firefox" rather than "Save File" in the Applications section of the Firefox settings).

If you're already viewing the remote URL, try disabling all other browser extensions.
  • Just found another example: https://www.cs.cornell.edu/talc/papers/tcicc.pdf

Initially, Zotero Connector's icon was the "webpage" icon and wouldn't work when clicked. No errors.
Reloading the page caused Zotero Connector to show the PDF icon, and now it worked.

All of this is with remote URLs, never file:// URLs.
Regarding disabling all other extensions, is that to help debugging or am I supposed to keep them disabled? If it's the former, is there anything in particular to look for?

You need to disable all other extensions and see if the problem still occurs. It's just a basic troubleshooting step.
  • Can't disable all extensions right now. I'll try when I have a chance.

But FWIW, turns out that in each of my examples, each reload flashes through a couple of icons in the Zotero Connector - the webpage, the PDF and maybe the red Z. Which one stays at the end seems to be random. When it's the PDF, it works as expected.
