Problem with integration of word plugin and box drive on windows

I am having trouble with the word plugin in zotero. I have word 365 and Zotero 7. I am a graduate student and we have unlimited box drive storage through my university, so I keep all my word files in box drive so they are backed up on the cloud. I have always used zotero with my word files saved in box drive and it didn't cause any problems until recently, but I think that it is causing a problem now. When I try to do any of the commands in the zotero bar in word it gives me a pop up with this statement.

Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

Working through the troubleshooting guide, I managed to get some more information. When I open a new blank document and I copy and paste my text into it, I'm able to add citations. After I save the file and close word, the next time I reopen it, the plugin is broken.

When I save a file to my local pc drive, it doesn't cause any problems and I am able to update the document, save it, restart it and the plugin works. This makes me think that there is some problem with the implementation of box drive with word and the zotero plugin. I can't be sure, but it also seems like my microsoft word started implementing auto-save around the time that my plugin started to break.

Also, when I updated to Zotero 7 it is painfully slow. It often crashes, and struggles to open even small pdfs. When I open it in troubleshooting mode it gets much faster. Does this have anything to do with the word plugin?

If possible, I would really prefer to keep saving my word files directly to box drive. I keep all my materials in there, it's much easier for me to organize, and it keeps everything backed up on the cloud without having to worry about manually backing up my files every time I make changes. What can I do to fix this issue?

    Provide a Debug ID for an attempt to insert a citation into a document that is saved in a Box drive.

    That just means that one of the plugins that you have installed into Zotero is making it slow. You should identify the plugin by disabling them one by one and restarting Zotero and notify its developer about the issue.

    EDIT: Although I see that your submitted report doesn't show that you have any plugins installed. If you do not, can you confirm that only troubleshooting mode reduces issues, and a regular Zotero restart does not?

    Thanks, yeah I dont really know anything about plugins. The only tool I use is the zotero with word plugin. When I start/restart zotero without using troubleshooting mode it takes 5-10 seconds to do any sort of action (scroll, click on the menu, etc.) and is nearly impossible to browse pdfs. When I start in troubleshooting mode everything is much faster.
  • I've create a ticket to track the issue. Seems like Box integration for Word is new. We'll try to get it fixed, but it may not be straightforward. In the meantime it might help if you store your docs in box without nesting them in a folder system, and choosing names that only include alphanumeric characters. Use "_" or "-" instead of space.
