Clarification on Zotero Use in Company Environment for Dual Study Program
Hello,
I am a dual student in engineering at a German university (DHBW). As part of my degree program, I work part-time in a company and write academic practical reports based on my work there.
To write these reports, I would like to install Zotero on my company computer. The company itself would not benefit commercially from the use of Zotero – it would be solely for my academic work.
However, our IT department is concerned about license compliance and referred me to this section of your Terms of Service:
"Any commercial or promotional distribution, publishing or exploitation of the Services is strictly prohibited unless you have received the express prior written permission from authorized personnel of CDS, CDS’ licensors or the otherwise applicable rights holders."
To be on the safe side, they have asked for a written confirmation or permission that installing Zotero on a company machine for non-commercial academic use (related to my dual study program) is allowed and does not count as commercial use.
Could you please clarify:
- Is this use case considered non-commercial under your Terms of Service?
- If so, where can I get official written confirmation, as mentioned in the clause above?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards

That line in the terms of service is about commercial distribution of Zotero's online services — e.g., trying to resell Zotero Storage.
