Zotero Connector keeps showing "Add citation style" prompt on every page in Edge browser

Hi everyone, sorry to bother you, but I'm running into a very frustrating issue with the Zotero Connector in the Microsoft Edge browser and would really appreciate your help.

Recently, every time I open any webpage in Edge, the Zotero Connector automatically opens a tab that says:

"Add citation style to Zotero?"
[Cancel] [OK]

This happens for every single webpage, and I have to manually click "Cancel" each time in order to access the page normally. It has made browsing very inconvenient.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

1) Uninstalled and reinstalled the Zotero Connector;

2) Changed the site access settings for the extension;

3) Checked Edge advanced settings and Zotero desktop preferences;

4) Ensured the Zotero desktop app is running properly;

The only workaround that partially helps is setting the Zotero Connector’s permissions to “On click” or limiting access to specific sites — but this disables the automatic saving feature, which I rely on frequently for my research work.

Some of my colleagues have experienced similar behavior, so I wonder if this is a recent bug or regression in the Zotero Connector. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a way to prevent the "Add citation style to Zotero" prompt from showing up on every page?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help or suggestions!
  • Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector for loading a page where this occurs?

    Oh, wait, is this on an outdated Edge version? The current version is 135. I suspect this is a bug in older Edge versions with the latest version of the Connector, which was just released.
  • Thanks! You might be right. My current Edge version is **124.0.2478.67**, which is indeed older than 135.

    I'll try updating Edge now to see if the problem goes away. Will report back shortly.
  • You were absolutely right — my Edge version was 124.0.2478.67. I updated to the latest version (135), and the issue is now completely gone!

    Thank you so much for pointing that out. I really appreciate your help! Also thanks to everyone here for your support — it’s great to have such a helpful community!

    Great, thanks for letting us know.

    We'll roll out a fix for this shortly, but anyone running into this should definitely update Edge and make sure they're receiving automatic updates (which include security updates).
  • This is fixed now in Zotero Connector 5.0.161.
