PDF saving is not working

edited April 10, 2025
Hi,
In Firefox, I have a pdf open from IEEE (or Science direct), I see the pdf icon, I click, a wheel is spinning, and then I got the error cross. It says ; "Saving failed. Is Zotero running?". Indeed, it is running.
Report ID : 543518263
I checked a good deal of stuff (different source page)...

  • Zotero Connector: 5.0.114, extension
You seem to be running a version of the Zotero Connector from 2023. Install the current version from the download page and check to make sure updates are enabled for your extensions.
  • I am running Zotero 6.0.30
Unfortunately, I have no control on the installation, it is done and control by my company.

Zotero and the Zotero Connector are separate installations.

You should ask them to update you to a current version of both. We can't help with problems with versions that are dozens of releases behind the current ones.
  • Though if PDF downloads are failing generally — including on article pages — that's likely a problem with the network connection of the app. If you provide a Debug ID from Zotero for reloading the URL and saving, we might be able to tell you more, but there's not much point. Almost any fix would involve upgrading.
  • Debug ID D1141711121
  • That's from the Zotero Connector, not from Zotero.
  • Sorry, I do not see how to get a debug ID from Zotero.
And I;ll think this ID would help in some ways.
  • It's explained on the linked page.
  • I do not see a linked page.
If it is by the submit button on the debug output, unfortunately I cannot use it output an error. I think my organization do not accept this...

"Debug ID" in my post above is an underlined link.

But yes, if you're getting an error even submitting debug output, all network connections from the app are likely blocked/broken by your institution, and PDF saving won't work. Zotero would generally be showing an error in the toolbar at startup that links to Connection Error.

Attachment downloads would work with the latest version of the Zotero Connector and the upcoming Zotero 7.1, which moves all attachment downloads to the browser, but that of course will require your institution to upgrade both Zotero and the Zotero Connector. If that's difficult, you may want to wait for Zotero 7.1 to come out and then try to get them to update.
  • Sorry for not having seen the link...
Not sure all is blocked because basic stuffs (almost everything but PDF) is kind of working.
But I guess there is nothing that would be possible here. The weird part is I think it worked at some point, but maybe it is my memory...
Do you happen to know roughly when 7.1 will be out ? Not sure, I need to lobby for an upgrade before it is out...
    Regards
  • It's about network requests. Zotero generally works offline, but attachment saving, error reports, and obviously stuff like syncing requires network requests.

  • So do you think the problem will be resolve with 7.1?
  • As I say, attachments will be downloaded via the browser in 7.1. Lots of other stuff will be broken in the app without network requests — see the linked page.
