Issue with footnotes

edited 23 days ago
I am writing a rather long document in Word and use zotero to collect all papers etc. used and to cite in this long document (at the moment I am on page 150 with about 800 footnotes). Over the last few weeks, a problem has been recurring: When I insert a new citation, I get a warning that it could not be inserted/updated. I tried again and again, but it didn't work. I then googled and found a solution: close both applications (Word and Zotero), open them again and then try to insert the citations. Most of the time it worked, but the problem keeps popping up....

Also another issue keeps me from working properly: inserting a new citation takes around 30 to 60 seconds until I can continue working with word and zotero... Maybe someone knows a trick?

I know you're all busy with your own stuff. Also, I tried to find a solution before I wrote here, but I couldn't do it. So I'm finally opening this new thread here in the hope that someone knows a solution.

What OS and Word version? Can you provide a Report ID after triggering the error?

Do you have "Automatically update citations" disabled in the plugin's Document Preferences window?
  • Hi!
My OS version: Sequoia 15.3.2 (24D81) and Word: 16.95.3
    That's the Report ID: 611917270
And no, so far I have not disabled the "Automatically update citations" - should I do that?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi @dstillman
Would you by any chance still be able to help me? :)
  • [JavaScript Error: "The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -1708.) @[prepareReadFieldCode:document.m:164]" {file: "resource://zotero-macword-integration/messagingGeneric.js" line: 216}]"
Yes, you should start by disabling "Automatically update citations" and see if you still get an error.
  • @dstillman
I disabled the automatic update of citations, now several problems occur
    - firstly, when I click "add new citation" the window doesn't pop up anymore to add a citation, it only opens the zotero app
    - secondly, the footnote I could insert was underlined and I have no idea how to get rid of this...
    Help?
  • How did you insert a footnote if the citation dialog didn't pop up?

    Underlining: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/citations_underlined
  • The issue appeared after I inserted the footnote, now it doesn't open anymore
  • The citation dialog might just be appearing behind your other windows. If you can't find it, restart Zotero.
