Changing PDF files while keeping annotations

Is there a way to change the PDF file attached to a reference without losing the annotations?

Let me explain. I have hundreds of annotations on a PDF file that has been moved. Zotero tells me that the file is missing from the original path, so I tell it the new path, but I've got the wrong file. I can't find an option to reset it to the correct file. If I delete the wrong file, it still comes back into the folder. I've tried fooling the software by putting the right file in the wrong place and changing the name, but nothing works.

Is there a simple way to change the path of an attached PDF file without losing annotations?

This is about a stored file? And you moved the file out of that folder by accident and then went to re-locate it but picked the wrong file, so it copied the wrong file into the attachment's storage folder and uploaded it, and now if you delete the wrong file on disk it's redownloading the wrong file from the online library?

Renaming the file via Zotero forces an upload, so you should be able to replace the wrong file with the right file (with the wrong filename) and then use Rename File from Parent Metadata in Zotero to correct the filename.
  • Thanks for the instructions.
I solved the problem by deleting the corresponding file in Koofr, which allowed me to specify a new path to Zotero.

I wanted to know if there was an easier way to do this in Zotero, but apparently not (also, this is a very specific case).
