Unable to Attach Stored Copy of File – "Add Attachment" Options Greyed Out

Hello Zotero Support Team,

I’m experiencing an issue where I am unable to attach PDF files to my Zotero library. Specifically, the “Add Attachment” → “Attach Stored Copy of File” option is completely greyed out and unavailable.

Here is a detailed description of the problem and what I have already tried:

1. **Zotero Version**: 7.0.15
2. **Operating System**: Windows 10 (64-bit)
3. **Problem**:
- The “Attach Stored Copy of File” option is greyed out when I try to add attachments.
- The “Attach Link to File” option works, but I need to store files within Zotero's data directory.
4. **What I have checked and tried**:
- Verified the **Data Directory** location under Preferences → Advanced → Files and Folders.
- The directory is set to the **default** (`C:\Users\[username]\Zotero`).
- The `storage` folder exists in the data directory.
- I confirmed that I have full **read/write permissions** on the Zotero data directory.
- I ran the following JavaScript in the Run JavaScript Console:
```
var dir = Zotero.DataDirectory.dir;
dir.path
```
➡️ Result: `undefined`
- Tried switching the **Data Directory Location** to a custom folder.
- Reinstalled Zotero and cleared the `AppData` folders.
- Launched Zotero as **Administrator**, but the issue persists.

It seems that Zotero cannot properly recognize or access the data directory, which disables the ability to attach stored files.

Additionally, I have noticed that Zotero does not automatically download PDFs when saving items from websites, even though I have enabled the setting:
Preferences → General → "Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items".
- The checkbox is turned on.
- I have tried saving items from multiple sites (e.g., Google Scholar, publisher pages), but PDFs are not downloaded.
- My institution provides access to full texts, and I am logged in through my institution’s proxy when testing.
- Zotero shows only metadata, no PDF attachments.

Could this be related to the issue with the data directory? Or is there something else I should check to enable automatic PDF downloads?

Thank you very much for your support!

    Your groups don't allow file editing — one because it's disabled and the other two because they're public open groups, which don't allow files.
