Is “add-in” in Zotero what “add-on” is for many software projects?

Hello!

There are few occurrences of this term in Zotero. Many projects use “add-on”. I’d like to know if there’s a reason for the particular Zotero choice. (/me In translation mode, so a real practical concern for me, not just scratching an itch…). TIA!

    What specific references are you referring to?

    The Word plugin is sometimes referred to as an "add-in" because that's the term Microsoft uses. Generally we just call it the "Word plugin", and do the same for the other word processor plugins.

    Zotero plugins — which run within Zotero itself — were sometimes referred to as "add-ons" because Zotero is based on Firefox and Mozilla uses "add-on" for the overarching term for extensions and themes, but we use "plugin" in Zotero 7.
  • Here you are:

    zotero.preferences.wordProcessors.installed = The %S add-in is currently installed.
    zotero.preferences.wordProcessors.notInstalled = The %S add-in is not currently installed.
    zotero.preferences.wordProcessors.install = Install %S Add-in
    zotero.preferences.wordProcessors.reinstall = Reinstall %S Add-in

    (from zotero.properties)
  • Right, so that's using the Microsoft terminology from the Word plugin. Those should probably all be changed to "plugin" (at the risk of confusing them with actual Zotero plugins).
