Embedding highlights and custom colors for Zotero internal pdf reader

I am currently switching from storing all my pdfs in iCloud (using Zotfile and Zotero 6) to Zotero Sync. Till now, I have organized all my readings from my Mac and usually annotate pdfs on my iPad using PDF Expert.

I would love to make this new workflow work for me. However, the unique nature of the built-in pdf viewer poses limitations to this. Hence, I want to know if there is any work being done on the following issues. Alternatively, does anyone know any plugins that could circumvent these issues?

1. Embedding Highlights
I would like to embed highlights in the pdf files itself (like most other pdf readers do) for posterity but also to allow for continuous editing with external pdf readers. For example: I often add pdfs to Zotero, begin annotating, and ultimately need to delete a duplicate page or OCR parts of the document again. From reading the highlighting documentation of Zotero, this seems to pose problems for the internal reader highlights. Additionally, some of my pdfs (especially heavy ones) run better on Acrobat. I would thus like to be able to smoothly transition between external and internal pdf viewers without having to export the file and reattach it.

I am able to use an external pdf reader for highlighting on my Mac, but unfortunately the current limitations require that I export this file from the Zotero IOS app to be able to continue editing the highlights. I would then have to reattach the updated file manually. This creates duplicate files on my iPad and is laborsome.

2. Custom Highlight Colors
I have a custom highlighting scheme that works well for my mild color blindness. Unfortunately, the Zotero standard colors are too similar to each other. Is there any way to edit the standard colors or incorporate a custom color option for highlighting and underlining?

PS: I am still using Zotero 6 as I am using the ODF workflow with Scrivener. Until an alternative is found, I won't unfortunately update to Zotero 7.
