Zotero not able to open IEEE Explore papers

Hi all, I realized my Zotero cannot open IEEE Explore papers starting from today. I re-login to IEEE explore and updated my zotero software version.

I have Zotero connector for Chrome installed (5.0.153) and Zotero for Windows (7.0.13 64-bit). I am logging in IEEE Explore using institutional login, there doesn't seem to be any proxy / redirection from my institution. In my case, I am trying to access the paper uploaded by my team member. I already tried with and without university VPN, updated and reinstalled zotero connector.

The URL I am trying to open: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9838770

I performed two similar runs in debug output and then troubleshooting mode. First run with debug output has Debug ID: D1126472500. Second run in troubleshooting mode.

Thanks for your help.
  • What exactly do you mean by 'open'? Zotero wouldn't be responsible for opening a paper in your browser unless you mean automatically download when you import into Zotero?
  • A more proper term should be "access". The papers are already imported to a shared group by other team members, I can see the list of imported papers but cannot view the content when I click on it.
  • Sorry, I'm even more confused now. If the papers are in a shared Zotero group, why do you describe accessing them on IEEE? And how does the Chrome connector matter?
Could you provide precise steps to reproduce your issue, please? (if you can't access papers in a Zotero group, it's typically https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/files_not_syncing but I'm still not sure I understand what's actually (not) happening.)

In my case, I am already synced without any error or warning. I can see the list of papers from the shared group as shown in the screenshot.

If I double click on the first paper, the paper always show loading (with the blue circles moving around) where I expect the PDF would show up. I did some logging and checking cached files, it turns out that the PDF is never downloaded to local drive, so I thought zotero cannnot access IEEE explore and download the paper?

If I import the same paper into another project using the connector, it opens without problem in the new project, but still doesn't open in the current project / group. I am new to Zotero and not too familiar with how files are cached locally, so it could be as simple as a configuration error or I am missing some step.
  • There is no PDF attached -- that's a webpage snapshot (compare the icon on the right in the first 4 rows to that in the 5th, which is for a PDF).
The snapshot, too, should load properly and we can check what's going on, but the main issue is that whoever is downloading the items isn't getting the PDF attached.
  • Oh that make sense, thanks for looking into it. I will ask the team to upload the PDF then. Please let me know if you would like additional information then investigate why snapshot cannot be loaded.
