The ISME Journal citation style missing DOI in the bibliography

Hi there,

I currently revising a manuscript for submission to The ISME Journal, but have noticed the current citation style is missing DOI's in the bibliography. I have found the below thread on how to edit citation styles via CSL, however, I can't quite get it to work.

Would anyone happen to know a similar style that incorporates DOIs ? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I am using Zotero 6.0.37


Taken from Isme-J's author guidelines:

- Reference style: see New Hart’s Rules/Oxford SciMed numbered references
- References are listed in numerical order.
- Journal article: Kennedy T, Jones R. Effect of obesity on esophageal transit. Am J Surg 1985;149:177–81.
Please include the full DOI link where available.

- Book: Long HC, Blatt MA, Higgins MC et al. Medical Decision Making. Boston: Butterworth-Heinemann, 1997.

When there are 4 or more authors, list the first author name followed by et al.

Page spans are elided (e.g., 213-5 and 137-87, 1185-2042).
Latin phrase ibid is discouraged
In-text citations: numbers in square brackets before punctuation [1, 3–5].

Would it be possible to modify the above citation style (https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/4aeac1069c1473b1e3ef76d7dcc7e2f39819420b/the-isme-journal.csl) so that the bibliography lists all authors for papers with up to six authors, and for papers with more than six authors, only the first six are listed followed by et al.?

I’ve tried editing the CSL code manually but couldn’t get it to work. The in-text citations are displaying correctly — it’s just the formatting of the bibliography that needs to be changed.

I'm confused -- you asked for et al.for >3 authors above. Has that changed? Is this for a different journal?

I completely understand the confusion (and I share it), as the official author guidelines I linked above haven't changed: https://academic.oup.com/ismej/pages/general-instructions.

However, this specific author listing format is something the Editor-in-Chief of The ISME Journal has just requested as a condition for final acceptance of my manuscript.

If you'd prefer not to update the already-modified style (which has already been a huge help — thank you!), could you kindly confirm whether the only change needed is to update the line:

bibliography et-al-min="4" et-al-use-first="1" second-field-align="flush" entry-spacing="0" line-spacing="2"

Modified to:

bibliography et-al-min="7" et-al-use-first="1" second-field-align="flush" entry-spacing="0" line-spacing="2"

If that’s the case, then maybe the issue is just that the updated style isn’t installing correctly on my end. :)

It should be
bibliography et-al-min="7" et-al-use-first="6" with everything else the same, yes.
