Advice on citing individuals items in a dataset
Hey all :-)
I'm not sure how to manage citing individual documents/items in a dataset. For example, the Vault 7 wikileaks dataset (link below) contains a number of categorised leaked documents, and I want to cite a specific document, but for the citation to provide informatoin as to which dataset it belongs. I'm not sure what the rigth approach is and couldn't find anything too helpful from chicago style documentation, which is what Ive been using.

EDIT: I'm wondering if some equivalent to a "book section" for datsets would be useful.

We haven't added detailed support for some of the new CSL variables for archives in Zotero, but the basic structure here is
Title: Protego Release 01.05 -- System HW Description
archive: Wikileaks
archive_collection: Vault 7
URL: https://wikileaks.org/vault7/document/Protego_Release_01_05-Design_Docs-20141009-System_HW_Description/
(and then date, author as regular).
You'd need to add
archive_collection: Vault 7 into the Extra field. I don't think it's currently pikced up by the Chicago style, but I think it will be once we roll the 18th edition out.
(If you're absolutely set on citing this as data -- we've come up with a format for datafile citations for repositories running Dataverse that's indeed modelled after book chapter citations, see e.g. e.g. https://data.qdr.syr.edu/file.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.5064/F6DDBH8U/XQBZBS&version=1.0 but it's very rarely used -- I'm not available of any style guide that covers this -- and for the purpose of proper citation, the file-level DOI is much more important than the details of the dataset.)
Using the "archive_collection" in extra is a good solution for me. Having separate sections, like book sections, would be nice, but not worth all the fuss.
Now I'm looking forward to chicago 18th even more.
EDIT: For the "type" field am I using the same approach as for reports and theses?
