JavaScript Error: "The user aborted a request." in Zotero Desktop Version 7.0.11 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am encountering an issue with the Zotero desktop version. I receive the following JavaScript error:

JavaScript Error: "The user aborted a request." {file: "chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/zotero.js" line: 314}

Zotero Desktop Version 7.0.11 (64-bit)

When accessing http://127.0.0.1:23119/connector/ping, it displays "Zotero is running"

The same issue occurs in the Edge browser

I've already attempted updating both the Zotero software and the browser, as well as restarting both, but the error persists.

Any assistance or guidance on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • (We only ever want a Report ID and the actual user-facing message you're seeing (e.g., the "Is Zotero running?" message in this case, presumably), not underlying error messages. We'll excerpt relevant errors as necessary.)

    See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/connector_zotero_unavailable

I'd guess that another extension is interfering.

I have disabled all Zotero and Chrome extensions, but Zotero Connector still shows "Zotero is currently unavailable," even though the desktop Zotero application is running

  • Did it used to work before? Are you running any proprietary security software?
  • Yes, it had been working fine before, but recently I noticed that the Zotero Connector is unable to connect to the desktop Zotero. Additionally, it shouldn't be related to security software, as I've turned off all security software (both in PC and browser), and the issue persists. I have submitted another error report, with the report ID 1533442571.
    Thank you!
  • Moreover, I have followed all the steps provided in the troubleshooting page to eliminate errors, including reinstalling Zotero and the Connector. However, Zotero was not reinstalled after a complete uninstallation, as I was concerned about potential data loss.
  • Your Report ID shows many Zotero plugins still enabled. You should test with Zotero in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins.

Beyond that, we can't really say more than what's on the troubleshooting page. If this happens in both Chrome and Edge with Zotero in troubleshooting mode, but you can load http://127.0.0.1:23119/connector/ping, it's very likely due to some sort of third-party security software on the computer (even if you tried to disable it). You could try an unrelated browser like Firefox.
  • In Troubleshooting Mode.

    Thanks.
  • OK, you'll need to try Firefox or figure out what else within Chrome/Edge or on your system is interfering.
  • Issue Description:
After updating my system to Windows 11 24H2, Zotero Connector (browser extension) consistently displays the error "Zotero is currently unavailable," preventing any interaction between the browser and Zotero desktop.
Both Zotero (v7.0.13) and Zotero Connector (v5.0.154) are updated to their latest versions. Prior to the Windows update, everything functioned flawlessly.

    Troubleshooting Steps Attempted:

Followed the official "Troubleshooting Browser Connector Issues" guide.

    Reinstalled Zotero and Zotero Connector.

Verified Zotero is running with administrator privileges.

Checked firewall/antivirus settings to ensure no blocking of Zotero processes.

Tested multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox) with the same error.

Confirmed Zotero’s "Allow automatic connection to Zotero" option is enabled.

    Suspected Cause:
The issue appears directly tied to the Windows 11 24H2 update, as no other system changes were made. I hypothesize that the OS update introduced compatibility conflicts with Zotero’s communication protocols.

    Request:
    Could you please:

Confirm whether this is a known issue?

    Provide guidance on resolving it?

Investigate potential compatibility fixes for Windows 11 24H2?

    Additional Information:

    OS: Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (Build 26120.3360)
  • You'll need to respond to what I said. What exactly happens in Firefox?
