Items per folder figure
The main folders do not show the accumulated number of items, but the subfolders do. In the former case the message is "No items in this view", in the latter "XX items in this view".
Can we please have "XX" for top folders so we know how many items are there? The library (root/top folder) shows the number, but not the top folders.
I also +1 for the request to have a statistical or metric view of the database, e.g. a distribution of publication years and so on. (Only if you have time and if it would add value to the tool).

But you can make Zotero display items in subcollections in the parent ones as well. Then your counts work as you suggest (may or may not be desirable for everyone).
Go to View in the menu bar, and choose "Show Items from Subcollections"
