Searching for something that might be in a PDF or its annotations?

edited 19 days ago
I'm reading longish PDFs for which I add many annotations. Later, to search for something I need to repeat the search in multiple places (content, annotations, outline, ...?). What's the best way to deal with this?

More context:

I just realized that when searching in the PDF reader, only the PDF content is searched. Annotations are only searched from their own search box in the sidebar. Same for outline items.

This is a problem for me, because sometimes I'll remember something related to a PDF but turns out it was in my notes, not in the actual PDF content. Right now I spent some time searching for synonyms of what I wanted and finally gave up - fortunately the search box at the library level found one of the words I tried and sent me back to the PDF. But even this could be more helpful: surface the annotation, send me to its page, whatever. Instead, I had to realize there's yet another search box specific for annotations, and now I'll have to remember to use it any time that I *suspect* something is missing.

I thought about creating a saved search in Advanced Search, but it doesn't seem to even search the annotations.

My questions:
* Am I missing some uber-search across both annotations and PDF contents (and anywhere else) to avoid this problem?
* I see that some annotation search functionality is newish, so is more complete search/surfacing coming? (hopefully at the PDF level, not the library level) Or is this something that should be done through some plugin or integration?
