different results for everything search in Web app/API versus Mac client

I am building an app using pyzotero, and for certain searches it's returning fewer items for the same search. So I tried the Web Library, and it returns the same thing as via the API.

what might cause this difference?

since the icon for search is always a magnifier, its not possible to see from a screenshot what type of search is being performed. in both cases it was "everything"

The other response wasn't relevant. It's just a server-side issue.
