Conditional ending ”.”

I am using the suffix field to add a short text or quote in the footnote when creating a citation. This creates a problem with how the footnote ends. In these cases it is desirable to skip the ”usual” period (supplied by a suffix in the layout formatting). Is there a way to have the end period conditional to when the suffix field is empty?
