CSL Search by Example Website Down?

The search by Example function is (temporary?) down. ̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶r̶r̶e̶c̶t̶ ̶a̶d̶d̶r̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶m̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶n̶o̶w̶ ̶s̶e̶a̶r̶c̶h̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶E̶x̶a̶m̶p̶l̶e̶.̶ ̶H̶o̶w̶e̶v̶e̶r̶,̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶a̶c̶c̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶s̶t̶y̶l̶e̶ ̶e̶d̶i̶t̶o̶r̶ i̶s̶ ̶n̶o̶w̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶t̶e̶c̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶(̶s̶i̶g̶n̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶r̶e̶q̶u̶i̶r̶e̶d̶)̶.̶ ̶T̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶l̶t̶e̶r̶n̶a̶t̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶b̶o̶t̶h̶ ̶(̶s̶e̶a̶r̶c̶h̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶E̶x̶a̶m̶p̶l̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶t̶y̶l̶e̶ ̶e̶d̶i̶t̶o̶r̶)̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶(̶s̶e̶e̶m̶i̶n̶g̶l̶y̶)̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶u̶b̶l̶i̶c̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶r̶e̶p̶o̶s̶i̶t̶o̶r̶y̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶M̶a̶x̶ ̶P̶l̶a̶n̶c̶k̶ ̶S̶o̶c̶i̶e̶t̶y̶.̶ ̶C̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶n̶f̶i̶r̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶u̶r̶e̶.̶m̶p̶g̶ ̶w̶e̶b̶s̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶g̶e̶n̶u̶i̶n̶e̶?̶

Edit: URLs removed to only keep the URL of the recommended website
  • There's something odd going on with the DNS entry for the official editor site -- all settings are looking fine. I'd assume this will just fix itself; it looks like an issue at GitHub to me, but I'll keep an eye out.
The MPG version of the editor is fine, but it's not up to date -- e.g. it doesn't use CSL 1.0.2 and I'd guess it's also several years behind with the CSL styles searched (we're also a bit behind).

The Mendeley version of the CSL editor is also typically significantly out of date, so I wouldn't recommend that (and it's definitely not more official than the version at citationstyles.org)

OK, the site is temporary available at https://citationstyles.org/csl-editor-demo-site/

I am indeed getting a DNS error when trying to validate the subdomain. @dstillman @fcheslack -- I believe you own citationstyles.org -- everything looks right for the rest of the site, but the editor throws a DNS failure. Can you check? (GH documentation here: https://docs.github.com/en/pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site/managing-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site )

edit: I'm actually seeing DNS check in progress across all sites, though the rest is still online, so this is a bit more urgent.
  • Thanks @adamsmith and sorry for the incorrect assumption I have made in my OP.
  • We haven't made any changes to this in years, but editor.citationstyles.org was a CNAME to citation-style-editor.github.com instead of citation-style-editor.github.io. I guess that may have been some very old configuration that worked until just now.

Updated to .io now. It's now a 404, but @adamsmith, I assume you just need to re-configure the site for that address for it to work again. (You might need to force a DNS refresh to see the 404.)

Not sure what you mean here?
  • Thanks @dstillman for looking so quickly -- the editor is now back up.

For the DNS check in progress, that's likely a red herring:

appears on all properties and doesn't go away, but doesn't actually seem to be a problem, so never mind.

Oh, actually, I guess it was that it was set to citation-style-editor.github.com, which is owned by the Mendeley dev who initially made the editor. So maybe it's not that .com stopped working but that it was using his fork all along and he removed it? In any case, changed to citation-style-language.github.io now.
  • (Just to note, it might take up to 2 hours from now for some people to see the correct site.)
  • We moved the original repo to CSL -- the redirect by GitHub broke, apparently.
  • Thank you so much for the quick action
  • @adamsmith: Ah, that makes more sense.
  • Thanks for fixing!!
