Duplicate and missing reference numbers

Help! I am working on revisions for a document with about 125 references. This is my first time using Zotero (versus endnote). I had to do some formatting of the references to get it to match the journals formatting. However, the references were all correct at the time of submission. Now when I try to add new references, it duplicates/skips numbers in the reference list. The reference list will say ...16, 17, 17, 19, but there WILL be a reference 18 cited in the text. In one point, the reference list goes ...50, 51, 52, 53, 51, 55, 56...These aren't even the references I am adding at the time. Any advice? Do I have to just delete everything and re-add it? This is a nightmare.
  • If you edit the bibliography of a numeric style, chaos ensues. If you can use "Revert all" in the Edit Bibliography window, that'll fix things (you'd want to make any manual changes in a copy of the document with citations unlinked).
  • Thank you, I will try that! I didn't edit any of the numbers, and only used templates for updating style but maybe I still did something since I am new to the program. If I revert, and it no longer lists the references in the correct style (I need alphabetical), then what is the best way to get that?
