Zotero duplicates re-appearing in bibliography after merge

I am generating the bibliography for my PhD thesis, my document contains hundreds of references. I noticed duplicates in my database and bibliography. I merged the references in Zotero. In my document text, I deleted all references and re inserted them to remove the a, b... The blue bubble indicates the reference in open in database.

However when I regenerate my bibliography in Word, the duplicates come back, the in-text references now say a, b... again.

I have checked in Zotero there is only one instance of the reference. This is happening for several citations. One reference has been deleted from the database but is still being generated in the bibliography, the rest are merged in Zotero. I need help a.s.a.p. Thanks
  • The simplest way to fix these is to remove them completely in Word and reinsert. Make sure you select the item from My Library section, not from Cited (if using the Red citation dialog).
  • Thank adomasven, I already tried this it didn't work for example:

    intext: Smith et al., 2004a

blue bubble not linked so deleted and used library citation text changed to:
    Smith et al., 2004

then regenerated bibliography in text changed back to: Smith et al., 2004a

There are no duplicates in my database all have been merged.
  • Turn on field codes and look for remnants of the misbehaving citation to delete it
