Zotero 7 and LibreOffice integration trouble

Hello,

I'm having issues getting Zotero to install the LibreOffice add-on.

I'm using Zotero 7 and Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS with Version: 24.8.3.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: e14c9fdd1f585efcbb2c5363087a99d20928d522
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 6.8; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-CA (en_CA.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

In Zotero I follow the prompts for LibreOffice plugin installation, but receive errors and the installation process just seems to hang. I'm not very technical, so I've tried to show my steps with the screenshots here.

My sincere thanks. Zotero is amazing and has been core part of my writing for 14 years!

  • We recommend removing any current installations of LibreOffice and installing it either via the apt repository or by downloading it directly from the LibreOffice website. Then the automatic installer should just work. Let us know if you still have problems after that.
  • (Also, Zotero seems to be installed via snap, which might interfere with the integration)
  • @jlepawsky: Yeah, to be clear, we can't provide any support for third-party packages of Zotero. We can only provide support for the official tarball from this site and zotero-deb.

  • I struggled with this for days. My solution came with going to the zotero-deb site mentioned here. The terminal code provided finally got me out of trouble because the sequence was all nicely integrated with both the plug in installation and the Java installation. Before that point I was in an endless loop in attempted installs of seeing the toolbar and then not seeing it, seeing words instead of the zotero icons in libre writer, and seeing apparent presence of the plugin but no communication between zotero and libre writer. What a nightmare. As a newbie to Linux, it seems to be the case so often that a solution lies in knowing the correct one-two lines of terminal code and the clouds miraculously clear. Unfortunately it is like a stupid treasure hunt to find it. I miss the one double click easy and intuitive installs in Windows, as well as decent documentation-and it’s done ! Hopefully more resources will be given to optimizing linux installation experiences going forward.
